Restoration Of Turbines

Introduction

Do you know, automatic transmissions can not operate without the torque converters? A torque converter allows the vehicle to stay stagnant while the engine runs and can propagate torque when you accelerate. Most problems related to the auto transmission that appear are actually caused by the torque converter failure. Hence, one should be updated to the needed torque converter repairs and maintenance.

What is a torque converter?

The torque converter/turbine is a fluid linking between the auto transmission and the engine. In easy terms, it makes use of the torque from the engine and turns vanes ( impeller or pump) to move fluid inside of the housing. The flow of fluid against them causes the turbine to move in the direction of windmill blade turnings due to wind. Faster the pump turns, the fluid exerts more pressure. This makes the turbine turn faster. However, these two components do not necessarily need to rotate at the exact same speed. The turbine is attached to the rotating shaft that transfers torque to the auto transmission.

Efficiency of torque converter

To improve the efficiency of a torque converter, a stator is provided which separates flows of fluid into different directions inside of the torque converter. Most modern cars embed a lockup clutch that kicks in when the turbine and pump run at the same speed. This prevents unnecessary energy loss through the slippage, this improves fuel efficiency. It is important for the performance of your vehicle that the installed torque converter is working as designed.

How to repair and rebuild torque converters

Generally, the failures that develop in a torque converter are related to worn out bearings, stripped splines, lockup failing to engage, leakage, the one-way clutch on the stator, and shuddering.

Getting to the torque converter to evacuate is a major procedure. It will require the auto transmission to be taken out as well. Once this has been executed, avoiding any further labour expenses and instead choosing for a replacement is recommended as the efficient way to fix the problem. This is somewhat because the torque converters are complicated to open and recondition effectively.

TYPES OF TORQUE CONVERTER

  • Single-Stage torque converters

Single-stage converters come in two types of arrangement: stationary and rotating. Single-stage torque converters comprise a variety of capabilities, depending on the model: The sumpless single-stage converters with the PTO drives are ideal for applications with

auxiliary hydraulic pumps and

power-shift transmissions.

Type Four hydraulic converters are constructed precisely for the oil and gas enterprises.

  • Three-Stage torque converters

Three-stage torque converters operate two sets of stator blades, and three rings of turbine blades. This design influences the increased torque up to 5 times the amount of the engine output torque. The three-stage converters also come with both rotating and stationary housing.

Conclusion

Although, car manufacturers don’t offer repairing of the torque converter, and offer to replace it with a new one. Fortunately, however, torque converters can be fixed up in other repair workshops. Proper torque converter repairs need special equipment for measuring, cutting it off, quality control, assembling, gluing clutch discs,  and so on.
