What is a torque converter?

Most modern cars embed a lockup clutch that kicks in when the turbine and pump run at the same speed. This prevents unnecessary energy loss through the slippage, this improves fuel efficiency. It is important for the performance of your vehicle that the installed torque converter is working as designed.

How to repair and rebuild torque converters

Generally, the failures that develop in a torque converter are related to worn out bearings, stripped splines, lockup failing to engage, leakage, the one-way clutch on the stator, and shuddering.

Getting to the torque converter to evacuate is a major procedure. It will require the auto transmission to be taken out as well. Once this has been executed, avoiding any further labour expenses and instead choosing for a replacement is recommended as the efficient way to fix the problem. This is somewhat because the torque converters are complicated to open and recondition effectively.

Although, car manufacturers don’t offer repairing of the torque converter, and offer to replace it with a new one. Fortunately, however, torque converters can be fixed up in other repair workshops. Proper torque converter repairs need special equipment for measuring, cutting it off, quality control, assembling, gluing clutch discs,  and so on.
