The RX 9070 XT is 10 to 16 percent faster than the RX 9070 in games, and 16 to 22 percent faster with ray tracing on. Both use the same Navi 48 chip and the same 16GB of GDDR6 on a 256-bit bus; the XT has 4,096 shaders to the 9070's 3,584 and runs them faster (2,970 MHz boost against 2,520).
At launch the gap was $50 ($599 against $549). The price of that speed is power: 304W against 220W, and AMD recommends a 750W supply for the XT, 650W for the 9070.

Games
On Tom's Hardware's testbed at 1440p Ultra the XT averages 81.8 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 to the 9070's 73.5, 71.9 in Alan Wake 2 to 63, and 65.9 in Black Myth: Wukong to 56.8. TechSpot's 1440p High run of Cyberpunk shows the same 10 percent (125 against 113). The gap narrows in games that lean on the CPU: Counter-Strike 2 is 6 to 7 percent, Baldur's Gate 3 is 4.
Ray tracing
With ray tracing on the gap widens: 45.4 fps against 37.1 in Cyberpunk at 1440p Ultra with Ultra ray tracing (Tom's Hardware), 68 against 57 with upscaling (TechSpot), and 30 against 25 in Wukong. If you play with it on, the XT's extra shaders and clocks count most there.
Power and noise
The XT draws about 84W more for its 10 to 16 percent. The RX 9070 is the more efficient card, and partner versions of it tend to be smaller and quieter. If your power supply is a good 650W unit, the 9070 fits without changing it.
Which one to buy
Buy the RX 9070 XT if the two are within about $60 where you shop. Ten to sixteen percent more speed for about 10 percent more money is a fair trade, and it holds up better with ray tracing.
Buy the RX 9070 if the gap is wider than that, if you have a 650W power supply, or if you want a quieter, cooler card. It still beats the RTX 5070 in most raster games at 1440p (our comparison).
