Games
On Gamers Nexus's bench the 9800X3D averages 208 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p to the 9700X's 146; on Tom's Hardware's, 143 to 106 at Ultra. That is the cache at work. With a mid-range graphics card at 1440p most of that gap disappears; with a fast card at 1080p or high refresh rates it is the biggest upgrade a CPU can give.
Work and power
Cinebench 2024 multi-core is 1,375 against 1,162, Blender 334 against 309, and the 9700X is level on one core (3,001 against 2,968 in Geekbench 6). The 9700X is rated at 65W against 120W, so it runs cooler on a small air cooler.
