The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is 13 to 17 percent faster than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D in Cyberpunk 2077 (Gamers Nexus and Tom's Hardware) and more than 20 percent faster in work tests like Cinebench, Geekbench and Blender. At launch it cost $479 against $449.

Both are 8 cores with 96MB of L3 on AM5. AMD moved the extra cache under the cores on the 9800X3D, which lets it run at higher clocks (5.2 against 5.0 GHz boost) and be overclocked, which the 7800X3D can't.

Games

In Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p the 9800X3D averages 208 fps to the 7800X3D's 184 on Gamers Nexus's bench, and 143 to 123 at Ultra on Tom's Hardware's. Counter-Strike 2 is only 4 percent apart (737 against 710 fps), because both are far past any monitor's refresh rate. At 1440p and 4K with a mid-range graphics card the gap shrinks to nothing: the card is the limit.

Work

Because the cache no longer holds the cores back, the 9800X3D is a much better all-rounder: 23 percent more in Cinebench 2024 multi-core, 21 to 22 percent more in Geekbench 6, and 26 percent more in Blender. The 7800X3D was a gaming chip that was ordinary at everything else; the 9800X3D is fast at both.

Which one to buy

Building new? Buy the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. At about $30 more it is faster in games and much faster at everything else.

Already have a 7800X3D? Keep it. Unless you play at 1080p with an RTX 5080 or faster, you would not see the difference. The 7800X3D is worth buying only if it is well under the 9800X3D's price.

Questions

13 to 17 percent in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p (Gamers Nexus, Tom's Hardware), about 4 percent in Counter-Strike 2. At 1440p and 4K the graphics card usually decides, and the gap shrinks.

Yes, both are AM5. A BIOS update may be needed on older boards for the 9800X3D.

Yes. The 9800X3D has its cache under the cores and is unlocked for overclocking; the 7800X3D isn't.
