Games

On Gamers Nexus's bench the 9800X3D averages 208 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p to the 285K's 157, a 33 percent lead; Tom's Hardware has 143 against 111 at Ultra. In Counter-Strike 2 it is 737 against 627. The 96MB of 3D V-Cache is why: games keep more of their data next to the cores.

Work

In Cinebench 2024 multi-core the 285K scores 2,313 to the 9800X3D's 1,375, in Geekbench 6 multi-core 25,837 to 18,740, and in Blender 562 samples a minute to 334. On one core they are close (2,968 to 2,832 in Geekbench 6, the Ryzen slightly ahead). For rendering, compiling and video exports the extra cores count.

Which one to buy

For a gaming PC, buy the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. It is the faster gaming chip by a wide margin and costs less.

For work first, buy the Core Ultra 9 285K, or look at the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, which games like the 9800X3D and works like a 16-core.
