The cheapest gaming monitor worth buying is the cheapest one whose refresh rate your graphics card can fill and whose adaptive sync works. For anyone on an RTX 5060-class card, that currently means a 1080p IPS panel at about $100, not the discounted 1440p screens getting the headlines.

On Best Buy's under-$200 gaming monitor page, as read the week of October 23, 2026, the floor is the Acer 24KG1Y X3bip at $98.49: 1080p, 200Hz, IPS. That is the pick. The cheapest 1440p step on the same page is the GIGABYTE G27Q20 at $161.99 (200Hz, IPS), and it is the only QHD model the page lists under $200.

The question comes up every time budget panels get marked down, and PCGamer's Black Friday tracker reports discounts of 30 to 40% on 1080p monitors this month. What it decides is whether you spend an extra $40 to $60 on pixels or hertz your GPU will not use.

How the graphics card sets the ceiling

A refresh rate is a ceiling. The panel only shows a new image when the GPU delivers one, so the useful number is the frame rate your card produces, and the monitor's job below its maximum is variable refresh: timing each refresh to the frame that has just arrived.

Tom's Hardware's GPU hierarchy (June 24, 2026) puts the numbers on it. In Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p Ultra, the GeForce RTX 5060 ($299 launch price) runs 70.7 fps. At 1440p Ultra it falls to 42.1 fps. The RTX 5060 Ti 16GB ($429) manages 86.5 and 51.1. On that page, the first card past 60 fps at 1440p Ultra is the RTX 5070, at 69.3 fps and a $549 launch price.

So across the $300 to $500 GPU bracket, no card on that page holds 60 fps at 1440p Ultra in Cyberpunk. The 1440p panel either runs below 60 or runs with lowered settings. For a demanding game, a 5060 needs neither more than 200Hz nor more than 1080p.

Figures as published by Tom's Hardware (Jun 24, 2026). The best figure is marked where a row is all one source.

Compare every benchmark side by side

The same arithmetic applies to refresh rate. On the Best Buy page, the MSI MAG 272F X24 is $139.99 for 240Hz, and the Acer is $98.49 for 200Hz. The extra $41.50 buys 40Hz that sits far above the 5060's 70.7 fps in Cyberpunk. That headroom only matters in light esports titles, and those are the only reason to pay for it.

Three markdowns, read properly

Acer Nitro KG273 W3bip. This is the headline discount. PCGamer's tracker lists it at $129.99 to $139.99, down from $199.99, as a 25-inch 1080p VA panel at 250Hz with a 0.5ms response time. The 0.5ms is Acer's figure, and no lab in our sources has measured this panel. Its 250Hz is headroom a 5060 does not reach in AAA games. VA is also the panel type the labs keep flagging for motion. RTINGS notes black smearing in dark, fast scenes on its VA pick, and Display Ninja flags ghosting on the KTC H27T27S VA. For the same money, Best Buy lists 200Hz IPS panels.

KTC H27D9. PCGamer cites it at about $129.99, down from $199.99, as a 27-inch 1440p IPS panel at 120Hz. That makes it the cheapest 1440p screen in our sources, but the tracker does not tie that price to a retailer. Its 120Hz still clears the 5060 Ti 16GB's 51.1 fps at 1440p Ultra with room to spare. If you want 1440p for desktop space and accept lower game settings, this is the floor.

AOC's Mini-LED panels. These are where the lab picks actually sit. RTINGS names the AOC Q27G3XMN its top monitor under $200: 1440p VA, 180Hz, 336-zone Mini-LED, DisplayHDR 1000. Display Ninja's October 22 guide picks the Q27G40XMN, with 1,152 zones and 1,200 nits peak, but rates its G-Sync Compatible behavior as unstable. A Slickdeals post tracked the Q27G40XMN at $229.99 at Best Buy, so it is outside this budget. It is the one with certified HDR, and it costs more than the cheapest panels.

Box claims are not lab results

Label on the listing What it establishes What would verify it
HDR10 support, HDR Ready The panel accepts an HDR signal. It makes no brightness or dimming claim A VESA DisplayHDR tier, such as the DisplayHDR 1000 RTINGS reports for the AOC Q27G3XMN
G-Sync Compatible, FreeSync The vendor says variable refresh works A reviewer's stability check. Display Ninja marks the KTC 27M1 stable and the AOC Q27G40XMN unstable
0.5ms or 1ms A vendor GtG figure. Best Buy's listings quote 0.5 to 1ms almost uniformly Measured response times. None of the sub-$150 Best Buy models has one in our sources

One gap remains. None of these sources reports VESA AdaptiveSync certification results for the sub-$150 panels, so this reporting cannot say which of them would fail it. A FreeSync logo is not that certification.

Before you click buy

Start with your card's 1440p figure on the Cyberpunk 2077 leaderboard. Look at the average and 1% low figures rather than the box. If the average is under 60, buy the $98.49 Acer and put the $63.50 you saved against the G27Q20 toward the GPU. If you are buying an RTX 5070-class card, the G27Q20 at $161.99 is the cheapest 1440p screen Best Buy lists that your card will fill.

Then check whether the exact model has a lab review. RTINGS has tested 416 monitors, and a budget panel missing from that list is running on its spec sheet. Use DisplayPort, too: RTINGS notes that its AOC pick only reaches 180Hz over DisplayPort, not HDMI.

On timing, Tom's Hardware's deals tracker calls late October a strong pre-Black Friday window for budget monitors. Prices at this tier move weekly, so treat every figure above as true on the date it was read. For the parts you are pairing with the monitor, see the sub-$1,000 build guide.
